Songs of the Hearth

By Rose Ure Mezu

Voices: At a Catholic Black Church

Voices belting out songs of triumph,

Voices crying from yearning souls,

Voices reaching from beyond self

From beyond, to touch the

Sublime, where deep is calling on deep.

Sweet voices, blended voices,

Black voices, sister voices,

Shaking the feet in joy,

Stretching the hands in exultation

Belting out rhapsodies woven with rhythm

Thrilling the depths of restless hearts

Rooted in dark, aching pains of bondage

And seeking safe anchor from earth's distress.

March sister, smile brother and laugh

For laughing beats crying to be sure.

Sing and dance folks, lust for life and laughter --

Surface antidote to grief and joy.

Dancing truly beats suffering misery.

In the Maker's promise of undiscriminating Love

There is bliss, there is hope

Of a non-racist Tomorrow.
